2006 IBC: Solving Means of Egress in Commercial Buildings

ICC Instructor, Mike Perrone, will provide the knowledge of requirements for means of egress including practice solving problems from a set of plans for a 4-story commercial building related to each egress issue.

Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be better able to:
• List and describe each of the 3 parts of a means of egress
• Identify the 7 fundamental means of egress design issues
• Calculate occupant load and determine required means of egress capacity
• Determine required number of exits
• Determine requirements for arrangement means of egress facilities
• Determine the requirements for fire resistance rated construction for egress elements
• Determine the requirements for design of egress elements
• Determine requirements for door hardware
• Determine requirements for locations and amounts of means of egress lighting and signage
• Evaluate the adequacy of a horizontal exit as part of a means of egress plan
• Evaluate the means of egress in assembly spaces
• Determine requirements for exit access widths in smoke-protected assembly seating
• Evaluate the adequacy of accessible means of egress

Architect Registration Exam: Graphic Divisions

This eight hour seminar offers an overview of the Graphic Divisions of the Architect Registration Exam and is designed to prepare interns for the successful completion of the A.R.E. All three Graphic Divisions Site Planning, Building Planning and Building Technology will be reviewed. Pertinent information regarding each division will be covered, as well as A.R.E. testing, instructional information and sample vignettes.

The instructors are Kurt Wassenaar, Architect and Principal of the Wassenaar Design Group, P.C., a five-person architectural firm located in Charlottesville, Bruce Grulke AIA, Project Architect with Clark-Nexsen Architecture and Engineering in Norfolk and Greg Winkler also an Architect with the Wassenaar Design Group. Both Kurt and Bruce have extensive experience with the A.R.E and in the academic community with Mr. Wassenaar serving as an Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of Virginia and Mr. Grulke serving as a Professor of Architecture at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Greg Winkler, a graduate of Virginia Tech, successfully completed all nine divisions of the ARE version 3.0 in 2007.

Recently, the program has been supplemented by matching funds from the American Institute of Architects’ scholarship program. Students are nominated and selected by committees within each school.

NOTE: This policy does not apply to Architecture Exchange East or events managed by groups other than the VSAIA (such events are marked with an asterisk).
  • Full refunds will be given, if refund requests are received up to and including the published registration cutoff date.

  • There will be a 10% processing fee on all refunds requested between the published registration cutoff date and the close of business two days prior to the event.

  • There will be no refunds given after the close of business two days prior to the event.
